The Tulsa Massacre of Greenwood District 1921

It began Memorial Day weekend in 1921 after Dick Rowland, a 19-year-old shoeshiner, was accused of assaulting Sarah Page, a 21-year-old elevator operator. Rowland’s arrest led to rumors of a lynching, causing hundreds of white men and 75 Black men from Greenwood District to gather at the jail. As the Greenwood men left, a confrontation occurred, resulting in a gunshot and escalating into a night of violence. White rioters then targeted Greenwood’s Black community, burning and destroying over 40 blocks of homes and businesses. Known as Black Wall Street, Greenwood District was one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. The violence left 10,000 Black people homeless and caused over $1.5 million in property damage (equivalent to $38.43 million in 2023). Most homes were rebuilt by 1922, but compensation was denied. Many survivors left Tulsa, and the massacre was widely omitted from the histories until 2020–it was formally added to the Oklahoma school curriculum.
